About Janet

Janet Davis was first elected as City Councillor for Ward 31, Beaches-East York, in 2003 and was re-elected in 2006. Since her election, Janet has provided leadership on key municipal and community issues, working to improve parks, expand recreation programs, increase community safety, protect tenants, clean up Taylor Creek and stop service cuts at East York Civic Centre.
At City Hall , Janet has led efforts to preserve children’s services, save swimming pools, expand library and public health programs, improve the diversity of the City’s boards and committees, and support Toronto’s immigrant communities.
Janet is a long-time advocate for child care, education and municipal issues. As president of the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care, in her 15 years developing child care at the Toronto District School Board, and as senior policy advisor to the Minister of Education, Janet’s leadership and advocacy won significant improvements and expansion of child care in Ontario.

Janet has a long record as a leading advocate in key municipal issues. Along with taking an active role in Citizens for Local Democracy to stop the megacity, Janet was a key organizer of the Toronto Water Watch campaign to stop privatization of the City’s water service. She coordinated the Campaign for Public Education to defend Toronto schools against drastic budget cuts imposed by the provincial government. When both the TDSB and the City threatened to close school pools in 2002, Janet formed the East End Save Our Pools Committee and successfully led a city-wide effort to keep pools open.

Janet has lived in the Ward 31 community since 1989 with her husband Mel Rotman and her two sons Aaron and Keith. Janet has been an active parent at Earl Beatty Public School and Community Centre as a member of the community centre advisory committee and Home and School. Later she was a member of the Diefenbaker School Council, and East York/East Toronto Family Resources-Secord First Duty Project.
